While The many saints of Newark is a film set in the same fictional universe as The sopranos it takes place many decades before the events of the series, and primarily depicts how a young Tony Soprano (played by James Gandolfini’s son Michael) first became involved in organized crime. That means you’ll see characters you know from the series (like Tony) but who are played by other actors (like Michael Gandolfini).
At some point, however, the filmmakers considered adding some of the famous members of The sopranos throw. Many saints Director Alan Taylor revealed NME that Edie Falco’s Carmela Soprano would actually appear in the film. In fact, the scene was written and filmed – but then cut from the final film.
This is what Taylor said:
When you’re making a movie, you’re not exactly sure what it’s going to look like in the end, and believe it or not, we did a few things that included other cast members. We had Edie with us and she dressed up as Carmela and we did something with her and it didn’t end in the last movie but it was a great excuse to see her again.
Taylor refers to the fact that he has appeared on numerous episodes of The sopranos, including the penultimate part of the entire series.
The director didn’t reveal exactly what Falco would have done as Carmela, but did state that it would have been the opening of the film. “There was some confusion about how best to start the movie,” he explained. “So we tried a few things and that was one of them. If you’ve seen the film, you’ll find that we’re starting it very differently now, but that wasn’t always the idea. “
I have not seen The many saints of Newark However, I don’t know how the film will open up or if it fits in better with the rest of the film. But I know the appeal of The sopranos was very the cast, as well as the actors. Yeah, I’m curious to see Michael Gandolfini as Tony and Corey Stoll as the young junior and so on. But the actors were so fantastic it would have been wonderful to see them again – especially if it had shown what Carmela is up to today. Don’t you just want to know where she is now in her life?
The many saints of Newark Premiere in theaters and on HBO Max on October 1st.
