Father’s Day is just around the corner. While most father-son bonds happen through soccer and cricket games, sometimes it takes a really good eye-pouch for us to appreciate the strength of the bond we all share with our fathers. Good father-son films pay homage not only to our fathers, but also to the various fatherly characters in life, without whom we would be less men.

1. The Judge – Netflix

Joseph Palmer (Robert Duvall) is a well-respected small town criminal judge who comes to light when his estranged son (Robert Downey Jr.) arrives home to his late mother’s funeral. The tense father-son dynamic gets one last chance at redress when Palmer reluctantly hires his son, now a highly sought-after Chicago attorney, as his legal counsel after details of a hit-and-run case he was involved in threatened with his inheritance to destroy.

2. The Lion King – Disney + Hotstar)

Based on Shakespeare hamlet, The Lion King is a timeless exploration of the central role a father plays in the moral, spiritual, and political upbringing of a child. As the king of the savannah, Mufasa Simba, his only son, must instill the courage to carry and use true power, not as a force of oppression but of harmony. He must do this while teaching the all too painful lesson that he may always not be around to protect him, even if his teaching will remain a constant source of guidance in this circle of life.

3. The Godfather – Netflix, Amazon Prime

The Godfather sees Michael Corleone, a college-educated WWII veteran who reluctantly descends into a criminal life after assassinating his father, New York Mafia chief Vito Corleone. With the constant struggle between the forces of light and darkness, perfectly represented both thematically and visually, The Godfather is an exploration of the true cost of blood guilt and the pursuit of the mythical American dream. If there is one overarching dictation, it is this: Family comes first, no matter what the consequence.

4. The Godfather: Part II – Netflix, Amazon Prime

The second part of the Godfather trilogy shows Michael trying to expand the empire left behind by his father, but failing to live up to the roles his father easily fulfilled. This difference between father and son comes into its own, Vito’s rise from gangster to godfather contrasts with Michael’s descent into a hell of his own. Where Vito was warm, Michael is cold, where Vito finds loyalty, Michael only gets betrayal. Michael’s Lucifer-like fall out of favor illustrates the pitfalls in trying to emulate our parents in a world radically different from their inherited world.

5. To kill a mockingbird – Youtube

Over the decades, the character of Atticus Finch has been something of a mentor to many sincere lawyers around the world. But nowhere is Harper Lee’s literary hero shining brighter than in his role as the father of his two children: Scout and Jem. In To Kill A Mockingbird, we see Finch in all his righteous glory through the eyes of his children as he risks social exclusion and often physical harm in his fearless defense of a black man accused of rape.

As a court titan, Atticus is a gentle, caring father outside of court who sets the moral bar very high for his children, who can’t help but idolize him. And neither does the audience.

6. Catch me if you can – Amazon Prime

America’s father, Tom Hanks, is perfectly cast as the affable but tenacious FBI agent on the hunt for the extraordinary con man Frank Abignale, whose real-life clashes with the law form the basis of this film. The constant cat-and-mouse game between Hanks’ Carl Hanratty and Abignale, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, forms the most unlikely connection between the cheater and the cop. A connection the two maintained long after Abignale was arrested.

7. The pursuit of happiness – Amazon Prime

The Pursuit of Happiness is considered the career-defining achievement of Will Smith and is the ultimate father-son story in which a homeless salesman works his way up to a real estate agency as an unpaid intern in shelters to tirelessly build a better life for his son (played by Smith’s own son Jaden). This life-affirming story is one of the triumphs of human will and shows that a father’s love can overcome the most overwhelming adversity.

8. Coach Carter – Netflix

If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes an honest, die-hard Samuel L. Jackson to turn that kid into a basketball star, or in the case of Coach Carter, a whole team of them. While Coach Carter is not related to any of them, it is the story of a discerning mentor whose relentless manner teaches a group of headstrong high school students the true price and value of excellence in a world where all else is unacceptable.

9. Batman begins – Netflix, Amazon Prime

Orphaned billionaire Bruce Wayne travels the world examining the nuances of urban crime following the murder of his parents. Although his father spends very little time with Bruce, the theme of fatherhood prevails in this Christopher Nolan classic. The film sees a desperate and disoriented Wayne who, among other things, seeks paternal guidance, which he ultimately finds not from his ruthless teacher and mentor, but from his family butler Alfred, who helps him not only with his past, but also the fate that drives him expected.

10. Lincoln – Netflix

In this masterpiece by Steven Spielberg, the specter of fatherhood is centered around a crucial moment in the American Civil War. Audiences watch U.S. President Abraham Lincoln – a unique paternal figure in American history – do his duty to pass the Emancipation Proclamation against overwhelming opposition as he strives to find a moral justification for removing his son from the To prevent him from participating in the same war.


Liar Liar – Amazon Prime

Liar Liar is the story of an absent father and a lawyer who lies almost reflexively. However, he is cursed only to tell the truth after his son in love has had his birthday wish come true. Deprived of his greatest defenses, he now has to navigate his life just telling the truth without destroying the one relationship that matters most to him, that he shares with his son.
